Responsible Reuse for a Healthy Environment

Reducing waste and protecting the environment are unwavering practices we all should embrace. Here at Pocono Organics our “loyal to the soil” mission means we’re driven to continue organic agriculture practices promoting healthy soil that creates healthy food for a healthy you and earth too! Developing ways to educate and encourage everyone to do their part starts with leading by example and sharing highlights of our own responsible reuse methods for a healthy environment.

An ideal example of what we do all year through is composting. Did you know Pocono Organics invested in our very own massive compost machine right onsite to process kitchen scraps or expired food from Pocono Organics market and café! Greenhouse and field plant waste, plus produce loss during post-harvest care also adds to this recycling routine.

Soil health is one of the three pillars of our Regenerative Organic Agriculture. Composting is one strategy our farm implements to improve soil health. Over time it can reduce input costs and grow more resilient plants.

Pocono Organics Steps from Food to Soil

1.         Educating our team, not only how to but why, helps drive their passion for consistent composting

2.         We collect the “green material” or kitchen scraps and plant waste, then integrate green/brown (nitrogen/carbon) into the composting machine, windrows or vermiculture at appropriate ratios

3.         Allow time for microbes and/or worms to digest; plus, ensure ideal moisture, oxygen, and temperature turning or tarping if needed

4.         Once the green materials are no longer identifiable, we allow time for the compost to cure before adding to our farm system

Together We Can Make a Positive Impact on the Environment

As 2025 approaches, our efforts to reduce waste and protect the environment will also look to you. Cutting brown paper bag throw-aways is a way we believe will help. We’re asking our market shoppers to bring their own reusable bags for purchases starting January 2nd.  While we will continue to carry a small quantity of paper bags as a convenience to our customers; we hope a fee of 10 cents per bag may inspire you to join in the effort. We’ve also created $2.50 non-insulated and $5 insulated reusable Pocono Organics bags available for purchase starting December 16th.

So BYOBag and be a part of Pocono Organics pursuit to make a positive impact on the environment in the new year!
